Lately I have been getting alot of music documentarys from Netflix, Mostly ones about Punk or New York scenes. This one happens to be about the "No Wave" scene of the late 70s and 80s in New York City which is a precursor to what is know as "Noise Rock". Personal I can't stand Noise Rock but I was curious of how the scene came about.

It begans with footage and interviews from bands Suicide, Teenage Jesus, DNA and various other . They talk about how the scene came about in the late 70s NYC and grew out of Punk. Than somehow the director trys to connect it with the new Noise Rock bands coming out today like Yeah Yeah Yeahs or  Sonic Youth. The biggest problem and the problem most of Rock documenties I have seen is how it just digresses into the old school bands b***h about the new scene happening and the new bands b***h about the bands that actually make it and are "sellouts" (The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs are swiped at alot).

Other problem is the huge gap from the 70s till now(or around 03) with Noise Rock. It seems that in that time their was no bands or anything happening which is a bit strange to me.

One thing I can't stand besides unfunny comedies is crappy documenties. This is probably the best you can get to find about Noise Rock and really I didn't learn that much from it. Stay away from this.

The Decline of Western Civilization(1981) is one I enjoy-Although they have some crappy bands like Alice Bags and Catholic Disipline, they got some great footage of Daerby Crash and the Germs, pre Rollins Black Flag, the Circle Jerks and some amazing footage of Lee Ving of Fear busting the chops of an audiance in SF.
the Punk Rock Movie(1978)has a lotta cool stuff from the Brit punk scene, with the Sex Pistols, the Clash,Slaughter and the Dogs, and,a personal favorite of mine,X Ray Spex-who prove you can play good punk with saxaphones.

Rcmerchant, I own all of the decline of western civilzations. They came out with three: The one you mentioned which is the punk years, metal years and than the gutterpunks. They are probbaly the best rock documntries I have seen. I will probably review them one of these days.

One documentary I want to buy is Heavy Metal Parking Lot.

I don't watch many Rock Docs, but I did like the Declines.  I haven't seen the gutterpunks one...have to check that out.

Hmm...I guess I personally don't consider the Yeah Yeah Yeahs "noise rock".  Trust me, I've heard some NOISE rock.  *L*  Neurosis, anyone?  Or, moreover, Tribes of Neurot?  Listen to them simultaneously.

I really like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

They had one on VH1 the other night, I think it was just called "Metal".  I liked that quite a bit, a big reason is because he talked to Dio, A LOT, and I just love his little digs at Gene Simmons.  They also filmed a little bit at Wacken in Germany, which I would love love love to go to.

Amanda I don't consider Yeah Yeah Yeahs Noise Rock either but they were interviewed and asked about it.

I think their considered "mainstream" Noise Rock if anything.

While I enjoyed "Rust Never Sleeps", the best Rock-doc is still "Stop Making Sense" --
"Wait a minute", sez the astute reader, "That's a concert film, not a rock-doc!" --
But really, contained within its parameters is the whole story of Talking Heads -- a very masterful film really -- not just pictures of a show --

I have no idea what this means.

I never consider for a second that Sonic Youth or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are noise rock. When I think of noise rock I think of bands like Force Field and Lightning Bolt or Gwar. Bands that are so unbelievably loud that one of their only claims to fame is just how loud they are! That is noise rock. Or maybe it's death by noise.

I like the titles that are being thrown around here. I'll have to check some of thhem out,..

I dunno about loud qualifing music as noise. I saw the mighty MOTORHEAD in concert at the State in K-Zoo...that was LOUD!!!! GREAT BAND!!! "I LOVE ROCK AND ROLL!!!!" Sonic Youth can DIE!( I'm an old school speed metal head....once again...I feel old...)....
