Need help with NBC? TV movie title...(sci-fi)

Ok, I believe it aired on NBC sometime in the early '90's and was maybe a two parter. The basic premise as far as I can remember is that a ragtag group of scientist/explorer types have created this vehicle that will allow them to journey to the center of the earth or at least somewhere beyond the core. There's probably at least five members to the crew, one possibly being a wookie like creature. I remember seeing at least the first half up until they run into some sort of flying/sucking like creatures. I know this is kind of a vague description, but hopefully it will trigger something in someone's mind.

I taped it when it originally aired on NBC and it's quite bad.  I think I still have it around here somewhere.

Cool, that's definitely it. You would think with a title like that I would've had no problem figuring it on my own. Is it really as bad as all the reviews on imdb make it out to be? I remember thinking it was pretty good the first go round. Granted I only saw half of it, but still...
