Mr. DS

I've seen several posts here and there about fight scenes in movies.  Was wondering what everyone's ultimate brutal favorites were.  You know, a fight scene that makes you almost feel the punches landed.  I have to nominate the following as my favorite;

Roddy Piper vs Keith David
in They Live - Theres something about that fight thats simply painful to watch.  Not sure what it was but the film does a great job in making you feel for these guys.  South Park actually recreated this scene when Timmy took on the other handicap kid in a fight.

I agree with you about They Live; many of the fight and action scenes were brutal, particularly the fight you mentioned.

One which always stuck out in my mind, though probably not as brutal as it is cringing, is the fight in The Deep, especially when the outboard motor is brought into it.

Sorry, it's obligatory.

In terms of really making you feel the pain of the blows though...  Hmm.  Prison on Fire's fight scenes were quite brutal.

Without a doubt, irreversible. I did not see that coming...

That movie made an impact.

The first 10 minutes of the movie, is hectic and has this insane soundtrack that goes on and on and on. It's in an very unpleasant and dark gay bar setting. By the time this scene comes, you are ready to vomit.

NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH! VERY DISTURBING

They probably have been toped by Asian / non-mainstream movies, but I keep thinking of the final fights on early Steven Seagal's films, like Seagal vs. Tommy Lee Jones in Under siege or Seagal vs the Jamaican druglord  in Marked for death.

What we are talking about here is not your usual hand to hand combat, but one that implies broken articulations, twisted members and eyer gouged. It's hard to find stronger stuff on mainstream, really.

Still, that fight betweem Chow Yun Fat and the sadistic guardian in Prison on fire is as wild as that, if not worst, because in HK flicks people don't get one or two punches, they get dozens, and all are seen in vivid detail, not in fast cuts.

The fights between Tommy Lee Jones and Benicio del Toro in The hunted were also very intense, but here we're talking about knife fights, which belong to another dimension.
Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.

One of the most brutal (and funniest) one's that I've seen is Marked For Death.

Steven Seagal (in his prime before he got bloated and fat) not only evicerates the main baddie with a sword, he then gouges his eyes out, breaks the guy's back over his leg, and the finishes it off by throwing him down some kind of shaft in which the baddie gets impaled on some pointed thing with his guts all over the place.

I agree with They Live that was a very brutal one on one knock down drag out pier 6 brawl!,

some other names i can think of are:
John Saxon
Charles Bronson

zombiedudeman

Deadbeat at Dawn had some of the most brutal fights, real hard-hitting raw street fight style, one guy even rips this other guy's throat out with his bare hands! Plus the nunchuck attacks are pretty bloody and everyone cusses each other out as they fight which adds to its brutal feel. I love that movie, it's one of my top personal favorites.
