Does anyone think they'll go with an anti-war message this time around? Or will it be basically just Gort on a rampage against the world? I honestly think maybe they should take off from where the original ended with Klaatu doing what he threatened to in the first one: sending in an army of Gorts to stop people on Earth from destroying themselves. At least it would be its own animal then.

I agree! Though they will probally make Gort a CGI Terminator type thing. I hope they don't screw with the look of Gort...he's about the coolest looking robot in movies. Turning off all the power would make the LA riots look like a holiday in the sun. They'll also screw with the look of the simple sleek flying saucer...and make it a flying Christmas tree. And  Klaatu will end up as some half human Klingon type as well,no doubt. And Patrica Neal will be a young sexy thing,not a common housewife type.
I was referencing Day the Earth Stood Still,and came upon a semi-remake made in England in 1954,also with Patricia Neil called STRANGER from VENUS,also known as IMMEADIATE DANGER. Anybody ever seen it? I never even heard of it.!

I have "Stranger from Venus."  Haven't watched it in about 5 years, but as I remember it they went the full distance with the visitor developing a romantic relationship.  Then, at the end, he just sort of disappears - I think as a side effect of staying on the Earth.  "The Cosmic Man" was definitely a better copycat.

There's  a Forbidden Planet remake rumor that's been floating around for at least a decade. Personally, I hope it remains just that.

I'm not a big fan of remakes, for me they're usually not as good as the originals were, I watch them, but only on DVD or on cable. I don't mind paying $2.00-$5.00 to rent one but I refuse to pay $30.00 to see one at a theater with my wife.
That being said there is one thing I've noticed, most younger folks who haven't seen the original film usually don't believe that there was one, or if they know one exists they will tell you it's probably old and soooo lame. Just had a youngster at work tell me this about the original King Kong. As I tried to convince him of the error of his ways he said "You really don't know about movies, you like that piece of s*** movie about giant grasshoppers" Oh to be 19 again and know everything about everything.

Remakes have always been around. There's several versions of The Wizard of Oz that predate the one most of us are familiar with to this day as just one example. The best remakes as always take things in a new and interesting direction and don't just try and copy what's been done before. Usually it's a director putting his own artistic stamp on something. It's what I personally like about the Alien sequels in that each director chosen put his stamp on the work. No question they did remakes better in the late 70s and 80s for the same reasons but nowadays they want to do remakes of remakes. In another few years it'll be remakes of remakes of remakes of remakes.  Sadly nowadays most directors don't seem to put their own stamp on anything and most movies just look all the same or are obvious take-offs/a mix of allusions to other more talented directorts who proceeded them.

Yeah...FRANKENSTIEN (1931) is a classic ...but where would we be without the CURSE of FRANKENSTIEN (1955),or TEENAGE FRANKENSTIEN? It's a hit and miss deal.John Carpenters the THING was more fun for me then the original,though I enjoy them both.
Come to think of it,FRANKENSTIEN had a few silent versions as well!

Some well known films that were remade several times, often the "classic" version was not the first one, besides RCMerchant's mention of Frankenstein, a great example.

Some remakes hit the "don't do it" button for me, some don't. This one kinda does, just because I don't trust the modern day lack of subtlety in mainstream films.

Regarding Will Smith as Klaatu (don't give them any ideas), I have a bad hunch as to a line of dialogue:

"Aw, Hell naw! I ain't gonna let y'all destroy the Earth!"

I guess I can understand the sacrilege of it all if for some strange reason they did a remake of either Lords of the Ring trilogy or Spiderman 20 years now.

Yes, I have heard about this, and against my usual problems with this type of activity, I really think this film is one that is CRYING to be remade. The "Alien Menace" (read 'Red Scare') paranoia of the 1950's has been replaced by the "Defend Za Homeland" paranoia of the early 2000's and the only problem I see is the films owner: 20th Century Fox. If their film writers follow their "journalists", then a remake of this film will be to quality what Ethyl Merman was to good music.

That being said, I am against such remakes, or "re-imaginings" or whatever the euphemism is these days. Battlestar Galactica was the exception rather than the rule, and I'm still waiting on Eick to screw that one up miserably. If you REALLY want to hear one that's just too bizarre, the same people are planning to remake "The Bionic Woman" into "Bionic Woman" (apparently, the "The" is too much for short attention spans) and make Jamie Sommers character "darker". Do we really NEED a dark Jamie Sommers? Do we really need another Jamie Sommers, generally?

What we really need now is Michael Rennie coming from outer space in a flying saucer saying ' stop these useless remakes of classic movies, or the earth will be burnt to a cinder'

As an aside about the original Day the Earth Stood Still. Did newscasters really keep their hats on in the 50s?
