Wacko pitcher and snarling bigot John Rocker--in a slasher flick? When did my spastic colon start running off at night and making movies while I slept?

You think I'm lying? Fine:

Be sure to take a good look at the cast photos. Bleh.

(Read about this in the Sports section, not the Hollywood section. Huh.)

Holy Whooping FUNT...
All must see the website and confirm how potentially terrible this film could possibly be. Starring John Rocker (who was, I'm sure, a thespian in college,) and a guy who actually includes Mannequin II: On the Move on his bio. PLUS AN ORIGINAL SCORE BY KIP WINGER. WINGER, DAMMIT!!!

Sorry, I'm foaming at the mouth for this one.

Flangepart

Gonna have to ask Nurse Ratchet for more medication tonight.

Jay O'Connor

Yes, I pointed our "Groundskeeper" with John Rocker awhile ago.  Look at "For Baseball Fans"

FWIW I don't think John Rocker is a bigot.  I think he just has bad judgement.  He was trying to taunt the NY Mets fans; that's who he was really trying to get after.  He just used amazing poor thinking in how he went about doing it.

John Rocker is emotional, head strong, and quicker to speak than think, but I don't think he's a bigot.

Lee

Yo, Jay, I totally agree. I think got on his case a little too much. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he should have said those things, but geez people! Lots of people are really like that. Is that a good thing? No way, but they were acting like he's the only person who's said things like that before. Shoot, I've heard alot of things about how Ty Cobb really was but he's seen as a legend.

Holy s**t, a sports figure vehicle with a second-rate washed up hair-metal idiot composing the score!?!!?  Must see..erghhhh...Squishy wrote:

Sure, and Mike Tyson's just a passionate lover.

Man, some sports fans are bigger geeks than the worst Trekkie. They'll make excuses for anything, up to and including rape and murder, so long as the perp plays ball. Trekkies won't even forgive Star Trek V.

Jay O'Connor

Hey!  I admitted he's got bad judgement and said stupid stuff he ought not to have, I just don't think he's the racist the media made him out to be

Why?  His roomate; the guy who lived with him in Atlanta for six months. Caribbean native Andruw Jones.  I read an interview withg him shortly after it all happened and he said that Rocker was not like that

Also http://www.memphisflyer.com/backissues/issue572/persn572.htm>John Rocker’s friends say the portrayal of the Atlanta pitcher is inaccurate.

His 'friends' are people like a Lebenese American and Asian pitcher teamate Bruce Chen.

Think about it, Rocker's now playing with one of the most ethincally diverse teams in tha Majors (Texas Rangers).

Lee

Jay, you beat me to the punch again.

Squishy

I doubt I'm going to change any minds, so I'm not going to argue this endlessly. I will, however, say that the Memphis Flyer article is either (1) standard paid damage control for errant jocks, or (2) the author is just another of the aforementioned endlessly-forgiving sports geeks, doing it for free.

He reiterates the usual excuses: everybody does it, other people do it and get away with it, it's "PC fascism" to deny him his right to express himself (in this case, with offensive and harmful racial and sexual stereotypes) without consequence. If a friend or roommate is too nice to light into him in a public forum--or accepts a check to provide the right quote--the scumbag becomes Jesus on paper.

The Flyer writer dreams, apparently, of a day when sports figures can do or say any horrible thing they wish, and walk away with their respect intact. We're better off, the article suggests, if Rocker openly burns crosses in front yards, instead of keeping his loathesome hatreds secret.

Rocker's playing with the Rangers because he has to--and vice versa. I work in a "diverse" environment, too, and I can think of at least four co-workers who would merrily start shovelling "those" babies into furnaces if their numbers were sufficiently greater. Which of us should quit?

Try this at home, kids! Get the family and friends together, maybe your pastor or rabbi or whomever, and have a party. In the middle of it, launch without warning into an unapologetic verbatim repetition of Rocker's "spicier" statements. Then ask yourself exactly HOW stupid one has to be to do it, unintentionally, WITHOUT ACTUALLY MEANING A WORD OF IT--since this is the excuse most often given to Rocker.

Now do it in a NYC subway station. (Bye.)

(Side note: Of the few people who even know his name today, some may admire Ty Cobb's stats; others may admire his more vile "qualities."  Most who do know him, know him as a walking piece of crap who was given extra leeway simply because he could play ball...which leads us right back to my earlier statement.)

Deej

I wasn't afraid until you mentioned WINGER...OH..the humanity!!
