Best Missionary/Monk Films?

Which is your favorite Missionary/Monastic/Monk film?

I've seen them all, and they're all good.

And they're all based upon books, except the first one "The Mission," which was witten directly for the screen, though based upon semi-factual-historical events. As was "The Devils," which is also based upon semi-factual-historical events, and is probably the best film Ken Russell has ever done. Even "Name of the Rose" was a good attempt at trying to adapt something for the screen, though, if anybody has read the book by Umberto Eco, it really need a television miniseries to do it justice.

One probably cannot list every missionary/monk film out there, as the list would run into hundreds ofr films, but one I would like to mention is "the Inn of Sixth Happiness" w/ Ingrid Bergman, Curd Jurgens, and Robert Donat. This would actually be Robert Donat's last film, before he died.

I mention this film, if only for "The Children's Marching Song" in it. "This old man, he played one . . ." even in the late '50's, we were singing this song in elementary school.

I voted for The Name Of The Rose. I've always enjoyed that film since catching it on HBO back in the 80's.

I'm not sure if you would really consider this a 'missionary' film, but it sort of fits.  THE MOSQUITO COAST has an interesting missionary feel to it, though the 'god' is technology/first world sociocentrism rather than God of the Bible.

THE SAND PEBBLES (1966) has a minor story of a missionary and his daughter that become a kind of tragic "mise en abyme" for the whole movie as all the characters become involved at the climax. 

Too bad we can't include nunneries like in BLACK NARCISSUS (1947)...

Black Robe. The Mission was stretched way too thin. Black Robe is probably my favorite Canadian film.
