Big swing and a miss.  I give em credit for trying and I'm glad there appears to be a bit of a  cult following for this one but it was like " waiting for godot"  minus becketts clever dialogue.  We wander about the huge garish estate Malpertius with Jan, who looks like some kind of nazi department store mannequin in search of...we don't know for a good hour and a half before the thing starts to pick up.  The last half hour is pretty good, if you make it that far but I suspect many won't.  Someday, someone might make a succesful version of this story but this isn't it.  I didn't hate it though and the horrible Dickensian peasant people in the house, the weirdness (Susan Hampshire plays 3 different roles with 3 different wigs) and the absurdity of it all kind of grew on me.  kind of

When I started watching the trailer within a few seconds I thought the old man in the bed looked like he was about to say "Rosebud...". Then I see the credits and it IS Orson Welles  :teddyr: Never heard of this one before, but it does look interesting enough from the trailer to be worth a watch. Some good camera shots on the spiral stairs.

I checked it out a few months ago. Brilliantly shot, adequate acting, but boring as hell. I had to stop halfway through, and thus never learnt what else it had in store.
Due to the horrifying nature of this film, no one will be admitted to the theatre.
