Portland, OR.  Over 50 years ago there was a city called "Vanport" (a public housing area for Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR) that was flooded by a collapsed dyke along the Columbia River and ceased to exist.  The two major rivers in Portland are the Columbia and the Willamette, both of which have numerous ports (hence the name "Portland").  Lots of great breweries, music, public transportation and bike trails in the city.

Also a great movie location. I think The Hunted was filmed there.

I grew up in the country, so the closest thing I would have to a hometown is this sad little wide space off the interstate called Belvidere which contains one church, one bar, one gas station, and more stray dogs than people.   :bluesad:  Although I don't live there now
