Not the kind you take, or the kind you bring from the mountain...the computer kind.  I would like to buy one, I'm not up on this stuff.
1) iPad is totally off the table, I cannot afford it.
2) Nook Color- we don't do computer based multimedia in our house, so it seems good, mostly light browsing, the odd puzzle and e-books. It has an SD card slot. This tops my list.  Not many apps though.
3) Kindle Fire- Looks impressive but it has several down points. Its has limited memory, and you are supposed to tie in with Amazon 100% for content and storage.  But it does have lots of apps, and is a bit cheaper.
4) Kobo Vox- Probably not, its not gotten good reviews.
5) ?

Anyone played with these?  And do you have an opinion? its mostly for my wife who can't be bothered with much technology.

Have you checked eBay for used Fujitsu Lifebook Tablet PCs? These are laptops with a reversible touchscreen which when flipped becomes a tablet; hence it can be both a laptop and tablet should that option be desirable.

I keep seeing these things at Ollie's Outlet & Big Lot's for $80 to $100.

Don't have the money for one right now, so I'm happy to wait and see how all the competition shakes out, and let others thoroughly test out the options.

I'm definitely going to get one. My wife has a laptop and an iPhone that she finds useful throughout the day, and I have a Kindle 2 that I'm enjoying. I definitely want to get something that will combine the advantages of all these devices.

Thats where we are, but i cannot or will not spend 400-800 for an iPad, just to have a toy.

Theres an idea, thanks

Just be wary. These are usually factory refurbished.
High end stuff at these closeout stores can be adequate for a guy who's always broke (like me), just keep in mind what you're paying for.
