RIP Harry Morgan

Harry Morgan, star of "M*A*S*H*" and "Dragnet", among others, has passed away at 96.  :bluesad:

He's probably most famous for "Dragnet", but my first memory of Morgan was from watching the Apple Dumpling Gang movies as a little kid.

Although I was always slightly partial to McLean Stevenson's Colonel Blake, I always appreciated Harry Morgan's Colonel Potter for the wisdom and fatherly presence he brought to the show.

RIP Mr. Morgan.
I don't always talk about bad movies, but when I do, I prefer badmovies.org

Very smart of them not to just bring in another CO like Blake. Potter brought a new dynamic to the show, and had a chance to grow into a character who was lovable in his own right. The two really were an apple and an orange, figuratively speaking.

Also enjoyed Harry Morgan in Support Your Local Sheriff, with James Garner, and as sidekick to Henry Fonda in The Ox-Bow Incident.

It 's a funny thing with very old actors like Morgan. I can be amazed that he lived as long as he did, and still surprised by his obituary.

RIP, Mr. Morgan.  I always thought you were a class act.  Sometimes, that shines through in the characters an actor places, and I believe it did in this case.

I'm glad HARRY MORGAN got to be 96.  Last I'd heard of him (though I knew he was living) was the less than sterling report of his spousal abuse (mid-90s when he was at least 80!)  Nonetheless, HARRY MORGAN will be most remembered as Colonel Sherman T. Potter on "M*A*S*H".  He also appeared in some great films like THE OX BOW INCIDENT, DRAGONWYCK, ALL MY SONS...

I had thought FRANK MORGAN was HARRY's father, but I'm unable to confirm it!!

Harry Morgan's father was Henry Bratsberg, a carpenter from Norway, and his mother was Anna Olsen, a housewife from Sweden. He was born Harry Bratsberg, but changed his name to Henry Morgan, then to Harry Morgan, when he went to Hollywood.


Anybody confuse him with TV personality Henry Morgan, like I did. Less confusion if they had kept their original names, as Henry Morgan was born Henry Lerner Von Ost, jr.
