What was that brain eating parasite movie....

I remember watching a horror movie back in the early 90s where their was brain eating / taking over alien parasites. I don't remember much, but the parasites entered through the ear. I also remember that the parasite did not like the brain of a mentally challenged young man (I think he was a brother of the main person in the film) because he was born with "half a brain." The parasite could not like there or something about the man made it leave him.

Does anyone remember this? It came up in conversation today and I would love to remember what this movie was.

The only ones I can think of right off the bat are "Brain Damage" (1988) or "Night Of The Creeps" (1986).
