Midnight Club 2 had difficulty spikes.
yeah no.

The Truth and Reconciliation level in the original Halo, on the legendary difficulty setting, has a few very unforgiving parts.   If you didn't have the right weapons saved up, that room with the four doors and occasional cloaked sword elites is a pain.    The Library level on legendary setting is somewhat rage-inducing too.  I got to where I could rock it, but I think I was a little crazy to tolerate that many re-dos.

I wouldn't say it is rage-inducing... more, just really hard... but did anyone here every try a "grunt wave" in Robotron 2084?   That'll fry your nervous system.

Nethack has not been mentioned.   Nethack is extremely, extremely unforgiving, and anyone who plays much of it has had a moment of screaming "nooooooooooOOOOOooooo!"

Battletoads?

I've heard from many sources that Street Fighter 2010 (NES) was intolerably hard.

CRAZY CLIMBER
The parts with 3 guys simultaneously dropping stuff on you is a pain.. but the real challenge is those damn girders and weights dropping on you!  AAAGGGHHH!!!!  They are the reason I can seldom pass the second level.  And unlike other dangers, they reappear on your next life!
