This is a very entertaining summer popcorn movie that will surely make loads of money.  The CGI effects are superior to RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, and the 3-D is not over done.  Unfortunately, Jason Clarke isn't a strong a lead as James Franco.  Also, I wish Gary Oldman had a bigger role.  Get ready for Part III.  It has a 91% rating from critics and a 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.  I would give it an 85%.

Liked it. 4/5 stars is fair. The intra-species tolerance message is a little thick but it's hard not to like a movie with a chimp on horseback firing off a sub-machine gun in each paw.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one - the CGI was flawless, the performances excellent, and the story engaging.
It does leave the stage thoroughly set for a GONZO sequel.  I bet it will be called something like WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES.

I agree with that, but I also thought DAWN was much better written than RISE (which was still pretty good). I'd give RISE a 7/10 and DAWN a 9/10; definitely looking forward to the next one.

Would I need to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes first, to understand this one? I saw the original and the remake with Wahlberg about 13 years ago.

No, I don't think it's necessary. You would understand Caesar's character a little better and why he is more sympathetic to humans than the others, but I think DAWN pretty much stands on its own.

Id like to see Charlton Heston pop up in a cameo.
That would be neato.

It is interesting that you should say that, RCMerchant. Charlton Heston had a cameo as Zaius in the 2001 remake of "Planet of the Apes."
