Remember this is critical acclaim and public appreciation, not necessarily their quality, skill, or worthiness.

Overrrated: The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, REM, GNR, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Prince, Katy Perry, U2 (truly great but truly overrated), The Clash, Moby, Eminem, Jewel, AND almost anyone who has hit the Top 40 in this century.

Underrated: The Smashing Pumpkins, Marvin Gaye, Dropkick Murphys, George Harrison, kd lang, Concrete Blonde, Dire Straits, Blind Melon, Buddy Holly, Edie Brickell, Amy Winehouse, Patsy Cline, Weezer, Joy Division, Michael Jackson, Genesis, Robert Plant (solo), Lou Reed, AND Sublime.

Just Right: The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers,  Frank Sinatra, Green Day, Pixies, Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors, The Cars, The Police, Alanis Morissette, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Nirvana, The Sex Pistols, David Bowie, The Cure, Oasis, AND The White Stripes.

I think more in terms of time periods with music...

To me:

Overrated: Today's popular music, 1970s popular music, most country music, rap music

Underrated: 1980s popular music, 1980s punk, 1980s new wave, 1990s popular music, grunge rock, 1950s popular music, 1950s doo-wop, 1960s popular music, surfer rock, classic rock and roll

Just right: classical music, big band music, crooners, 1940s-1950s country music

This thread probably belongs in the Entertainment part of the forum.  It's a good topic.
I think I don't really know what you're getting at.  I'm a dummy... "Allhollowhead".

I don't agree that JIMI HENDRIX, JANIS JOPLIN, THE ROLLING STONES are OVERRATED.
I can't stand U2 anymore, and I had both Boy and War on vinyl... THAT BAND are overrated.
Regarding this: "...almost anyone who has hit the Top 40 in this century..." is overrated.
I also disagree, assuming AMY WINEHOUSE charted in the TOP 40... she sure belonged there, but in a dearth of great music, she was an oasis.  Wha what are you getting at...?

Clarify.  If these aren't your opinions, whose are they?

I do think Living Colour, Hunters and Collectors, and Midnight Oil are underrated.
