KING KONG (1976)

I remember seeing the movie poster on the back covers of comic books. The posters made Kong look huge (straddling both of the twin towers). He wasn't nearly that big in the movie (or maybe the towers weren't nearly that small).

Seems like that should also make Jessica Lange really tall, proportionately, in the picture!
Kong sure has goofy footwork-- he looks like he's about to fall.

What a long, overblown, overbudgeted film this was.
I still liked this at the time.  I remember watching it years later at my aunt's house in Missoula, MT.  We all died laughing because she had screen windows and gnats came in and got all over the tv screen, making everyone look like they had a bad case of blackheads.

One thing about that poster that I have always wondered about. What the hell is Kong holding in his right hand. It is too big to be helicopter or airplane. I've wondered if it was supposed to be some sort of mast off the roof, but I'd honestly also accept that Kong managed to grab a moon rocket or something.

I think it's the remnants of the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group after releasing King Kong and Orca.

There are a few things about this version I do like.

Most notably, and mentioned before is the suit done by Rick Baker.  All these years later, it still looks good.  Its very expressive, you can see Rick' eyes so this version of Kong is relatable.  Its easy to know what he's think and when.

I also like the reason they go to Skull Island in the first place.  Looking for a new oil deposit makes more sense then going there to film a movie.  Especially back in the 1930s, thee time of the original kong was made, I think 99% of a film was filmed on a stage set.

I saw this when I was nine: I enjoyed it but I don't know what I would think of it now.
