I'm currently working my way through another Full Moon triple feature release. This one is called Rituals of the Occult. These releases tend to have one movie from either Full Moon's glory years or just after them and then two crappier movies. Here we have Netherworld, Voodoo Academy, and Totem.

Netherworld is the "A picture" here so to speak even though its really B or C level at best. Still, pretty fun and was shot on location in Louisiana just before Full Moon really ran out of money and before they got their current Chinese backers.

Voodoo Academy really took me by surprise. Not because it was good or anything, but because of how homoerotic it was. If you've ever seen the cover for the sequel of this you wouldn't be surprised, but I went into the movie cold. Really it makes Nightmare on Elm Street 2 look tame by comparison. It actually has some fairly interesting dialogue early in the film. Then it gets to the homoerotic stuff which I guess was intended for young gay male horror/b movie fans. I'm not in the demographic, so can't really comment on how effective that stuff is. My guess is it would be like how a straight horror fan views the female exploitation in something like the Bloody Pit of Horror. It's more just silly than anything.

The last one Totem I still have to finish. It's about six people trapped in the woods after being sent there by some mysterious force. There looks to be absolutely no budget on this thing, but still kind of fun.

Not Full Moon movies but I always enjoyed Scared Stiff (1987), Voodoo Dawn (1990) and Headhunter (1988). Worth checking out if you like bad movies with voodoo.

I'll have to try to track those down :) The 1980s is one of my favorite eras for bad movies. I like up until 1993 too as you still get some of the 1980's atmosphere in some of those movies. By 1994 though movies tend to be far enough removed from the 1980's as to have a completely different vibe.

JooC has there ever been a good movie with voodoo in it?

John Schlesinger's The Believers with Martin Sheen and Helen Shaver.

The Skeleton Key. A bit predictable, but not bad. I might be misremembering, but I think Angel Heart might have had some voodoo in it. I thought that was a pretty good film.

Pacman000

Technically Hoodoo, but close enough.

How about a little Rasta voodoo?

Sorry...

or maybe some Australian Aboriginal voodoo (not really)

Sorry...

Then there's actual voodoo

Sorry...

This movie was based on a real life account by a Harvard anthropologist who posited that 'zombies' were people put into a coma through teterodotoxin, then revived and kept as slaves. Pretty crazy stuff.

And for more fun, how about some James Bond voodoo?

Sorry...
