Detective hired to find movie

Looking for the title of a movie.
A theater owner/movie collector hires a detective to find a movie that was shown only
once and when was shown caused a riot. The movie title he was looking for may have been French. After a international trek through London and beyond he finds the film and takes it back to the collector. He then demands to see the film. I found the title on wikipedia but lost the link.
