Good night WILLIAM, we loved you!

When TV came to South Africa in 1976 (yes, 1976) one of the first programs broadcast was the miniseries Rich Man Poor Man and William Smith gained a huge fan base with his portrayal of Falconetti: so much so that he got mobbed when he visited here a few years later. RIP.
We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.

One of the last classic "tough guy" actors. I recall reading interviews with William Smith and Don Stroud in the 1990s (I think it was Starlog Magazine). Both had similar careers playing bad guys, and both had health issues from injuries from filming and from drug/alcohol abuse. Smith told about his time filming Conan the Barbarian with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Things got a bit out of hand when Smith beat a very cocky Schwarzenegger at arm wrestling on the set.

Anyway, RIP

Alex

A sad loss. He always came off as a legitimate tough guy in his roles.
