I watched this movie tonight I picked up at the library and it kept me on the edge. It wasn't a movie that I found myself trying to get up off the couch in a dark living room to go and turn on the lights. I was a little to frightened to move. It had some hair raising moments as well as the jumpy jitters every time I heard a noise outside. It definitely is one I will add to my collection- if I can find it.

Best to look for the video of this film in your neighborhood video store's bargain bin, since it's no longer in print.
Otherwise, try to take a chance at viewing "Gothic" director Ken Russell's other earlier works, such as "Women In Love" and "The Devils"(as well as "Tommy" and Litzomania");extradoinary movies that shows this filmmaker at the top of his game,as well as in his prime, when he really knew how to make thoroughly entertaining, and very shocking movies.
You'll probably also love Russell's "alir of the White Worm",about a killer snake woman who literally puts the bite on her victims(and worships a giant underground snake);it's got all of trademark Ken Russell shocks that you loved in "Gothic".
                 So,dig in....

I meant; "Lair Of The White Worm".
                         Sorry!!!

Gothic is still available on DVD at Amazon.com
If God is watching us, the least we can do is be
entertaining.

Oh, that "Gothic." I didn't recognize it from Callysto's description. Maybe, because, though I like most of what Ken Russell has done, I never cared much for his "Gothic."
Maybe, because it is one of the few films I find that is virtuallly incomprehensible, because of its bizarreness. Therefore, I am going to do something I don't usually do.
I am going to recommend that if one has not seen "Gothic" and wants to see it, they first read the review of it in "The Modern Horror Film: 50 Cntemporary Classics from 'The Curse of Frankenstein' to 'The Lair of the White Worm' " by John McCarty. The book also has, besides good reviews of "Gothic" and "Lair of the White Worm," good reviews of Ken Russell's "The Devils" and "Altered States."
Of course, it one wants a review of "Lair of the White Worm," there is a good one by Andrew at this site. Enjoy!
