Would anyone have any ideas on how to go about starting a film festival? I tried going ot a local theater and asking if they would have a midnight showing of "The CrawlingEye" but they told me it would be $400.00 a weekend and asked me to foot the bill. I would like to eventually start a film festival but at that price it would be impossible. I figure there must be a loophole I am missing so I am asking here. Please, if you have any ideas at all I would love to hear them. I am not above trying anything now.  Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I have a feeling you will need to fork out a lot of money, unless it's an independant movie festival cos I'm sure independant film makers would gladly give their work for free.  But I don't know a lot about organising one myself. I could ask my media teacher if you want.

Have a really good paying job, with steady hours and working days(5 days a week)to fully back you up,since you want to present this as a professional looking event, with really great movies to show, then you're on the road to success there,X.
Asking your media teacher would be a good idea, too, for he could give you some helpful hints on how to make this a successful event.

I would appreciate it if you could ask your media teacher for me.  Thank you very much for any information you can provide.  I just need to get this off the ground even if the firstfew years are a little hard.

Do you have a college near by, prefereably one where not everyone is a commuter student?  You might be able to get a break on renting an auditorium (or some such venue), particularly if there is flim department (and possibly film students who'd want to co-host--though that has its own issues.)  The upside of having it at a college is that there is bound to be a ready market .

If possible, maybe you could find a theater owner who has a similar passion for horror and sci-fi who may cut you a break... also try to get some volunteers to man the doors and be ushers (a chunk of the $400/night is probably to pay the theater's Stridex Patrol).  It'll still probably cost you some.

Get ahold of a bar that has a video projector capacity re. sports/the weekly football match --
Get ahold of some Public Domain videos -- Terror Train, Ghidrah:  The 3-headed Monster, etc. etc. etc. --
Cost:  Whatever you pay to rent/buy the videos.  Could be free.  Oh, spend some money to xerox some advertising posters, etc. 3 cents a copy. Bar gets booze money/you get pleasure of seeing bad movie in company of like-minded individuals all drunked up.  Simplest goddam thing in the world . . .
Play Demons of Stupidity CDs while you change the tapes . . .
