The Burgomaster

About 25 or 30 years ago, I saw a show on television late one night. I am not sure if it was a feature length movie or an episode of a TV series or what. All I remember is that it took place in a futuristic society where food was rationed (sort of like in SOYLENT GREEN). The government issued vouchers that people could redeem for food. Anyway, this guy lost some of his vouchers and he could not get enough food for his family. At the end of the program, someone asked the guy how his family was able to survive without enough food. Then the camera pulled back and you could see that the guy's arm was missing. Does anyone know the name of this classic piece of entertainment?

Was it b/w? if so it might have been a twilight zone episode

The Burgomaster

No, I'm pretty sure that it was in color. I have all of the Twilight Zones on dvd and it isn't one of the episodes. It's driving me nuts because I saw it once and never saw it again. I don't think it was a Night Gallery episode either.

Sounds very familiar. I think it was an old Outer Limits.

Gentlemen. You can't fight in here. This is the War Room!

I had a quick look at the episode descriptions of all the old Outer Limits episdoes, and none of them seem to resemble your synopsis.

It's not familiar to me, but it sounds like an episode of an anthology show. Maybe Alfred Hitchcock Presents?

I'm thinking this was probably a feature movie or perhaps an anthology, since I doubt this kind of ending would have made it past the TV censors in those days (correct me if I am in error, although the TZ episode "To Serve Man" was rather grusome fare--get it, yuk-yuk.)

I saw this too, i'd be curious to know what it is. It almost sounds like one of the new twilight zone shows but I don't know - it could be "Night Gallery" since that show often had a darker theme. I'll try and rattle my brain somemore, a good source to hunt is that tvtome.com as mentioned above since they have episode listings for various shows.

Could it have been Tales from the Darkside? Or is that show too recent? That sounds like something that could be on Tales from the Darkside!

The Burgomaster

No. It wasn't Tales from the Darkside. I saw it in the 1974 - 1976 timeframe, if that helps. It was on at about 2:00 in the morning. I was up flipping channels (in those days, we only had about 8 channels to chose from, and you had to "flip" through them because there was no remote control. Just a dial with the channel numbers on it that you had to turn by hand. Imagine that!) Anyway, I was up flipping channels and I stumbled upon it. I never saw it again after that night.
