Go with originals. Getting movies with their original box art is so much more satisfying than a copy in a blank sleeve. Plus, it's a lot more legal.

Craig, please do not trade copied movies via the message board.  I must keep the site within strict guidelines, just in case.  No intent on my part to be rude, just looking out for the site.

i understand
but copied movies are as good as the originals
why spend money on the case when all you want to do is view the movie
besides many sited have sleeve scans
or one can make their own covers which is totaly rad

For collectors, a copy is never as good as an original.  I'll use a trading card analogy, would you rather have a real Jordan rookie or a copy of it?  Also copying from vhs to vhs, the copy won't be as good the original.  The hunt for an original copy of a rare movie makes having an original better too.

i agree with you there
but i just want want to see the movies
i would never buy a photocopied flaming carrot comic
or a burnt beck cd
but i'm on a tight budget and some bad movies are hard to find, or expensive now
and i am not a collecter
just a viewer
and a big fan of bad movies :)

I enjoy hunting for bad movies--I usually only go with dubbed copies if there's almost no other way to get it--though I will say that I do business quite often with the "gray market" video dealers out there--a lot of stuff isn't available elsewhere.

But man, there's nothing like picking up a trashy video on EBay--I just "won" a copy of ALIEN DEAD, though some might say that they should be paying me to take it off their hands.  Sometimes I comb the rental stores but usually it's pretty slim pickings.  I really need to start checking out the pawn shops.

e bay eh
i never really thought of that
i'm looking for movies like buckaroo bonzai, they live, hilbillies in a haunted house, old slashers etc..
i may go check ebay
was the movie you got expensive?

jmc

god no, less than six dollars, including shipping.

There are a ton of dubbed videos out there on EBay as well.

Places like Video Screams are good too....borderline legal, but apparently their behinds are covered by the "this is for private use from one collector to another" legalese, because just about every place I've seen has that as a disclaimer.  But EBay is probably your best bet for ex-rentals at low prices, at least online.  Try half.com while you're at EBay too....

My friend bought a DVD burner recently, and he makes really good copies. He also buys blank DVD cases (the ones you would get if you actually bought the DVD) and than copies the artwork on a s c anner and prints it out. Can barely tell its a copy. SO, if I like a movie, but not enough to pay around 15 bucks for it, copying is fine. No worse than burning a DVD.

Craig, you're missing the main problem here.

In this day and age where all of the various video companies are enforcing their copyright laws, they are actively looking for places that sell copied/bootleg tapes and dvds. When they find them, they contact their lawyers and said lawyers have such message boards and websites shut down, if not going the full way and charging the webmaster with criminal acts by organizing such a bootleg trading station.

See where I'm going with this?

And trust me, it happens.
