What's with the new pop-up ads on here!?

They suck!!

They're like pesky flies that won't go away.

You keep swatting and swatting but they just keep coming back!

Also, those of us that had pics on our profiles....our pics are gone including yours Andrew....

Mozilla and Opera have the option to never allow "unrequested" windows to open. They both have their minor bugs, but, as one reviewer put it, they are what Internet Explorer should've been years ago.  I only keep IE for the increasingly-rare site that isn't compatible with Mozilla (where important data is garbled or not visible).

Sorry Squishy.....you're speaking Greek to me......

What are Mozilla and Opera?

I haven't the foggiest....

Please...enlighten all of us....

Mozilla and Opera are web browsers.  I use Mozilla on Windows and Linux and between the tabbed multi-page views,  the password manager, and the better control over Javascript (like Squishy mentioned), I prefer it over Internet Explorer.

I have not used Opera in years but those who I've talked to who do say it's lightweight and fast.

I haven't seen any popups, either.

Okay, fixed the profile pics - knew exactly what I screwed up there.  It only affected the people who have pics that I uploaded to the server.

Pop-ups?  I also use Mozilla (www.mozilla.org), but hate them myself.  Despite the fact that pop-ups and pop-unders are worth more ad $ than regular banners, I do not run them.  I pulled up IE to see if I could get any pop-ups.  Reloaded the page about 100 times - none.  So I went and checked my pages with Burst and Fastclick - none there.

One possibility is that Burst or Fastclick was having a problem when you were looking at the site.  The other is that somethink like Gator has been installed on your machine.  Gator is known to install itself, almost like a hack attack, when you visit a webpage.  Here is a page about Gator:

http://www.cexx.org/gator.htm

The meat of what they say about Gator:
"But its main purpose is to load an advertising spyware module called OfferCompanion, which displays pop-up ads when visiting some Web sites."

Try downloading and running AdAware.  That should find Gator or any other program that is doing this:

I seem to recall getting a popup ad a week or so ago, but nothing since then. I'd forgotten about it until just now.
