i've always said its impossible to have an original idea: everything has pretty much been done in some sort of context or other, but it's how you treat it that makes it 'original'.

in film, they haven't really dealt with fantasy too much, but to combine fantasy with present day/future scifi type stuff is an original type slant.

NEC i reccomend you have a look at the final fantasy video game series, it's sorta cyber-punk with swords and magic.  [don't be discouraged by the 'spirits within' movie, it has nothing to do with the series]

i think its a great way of modernising the fantasy genre, so it doesn't get stuck in just trying to be like lord of the rings, with elves and stuff.  plus the japanime designs for all the scenery is kinda cool

Having a younger brother that's heavily into gaming, I've been familiar with Final Fantasy for many, many years now. But I know what you mean.

If I could make a movie about the struggle between man and machine, it'd be a more personal affair, with this one guy, kind of unkempt, sort of smelly, more than a little overweight, and his PC.  He just sits in front of the computer all day long playing spades on Yahoo or downloading Olsen twins pictures or whatever.  Then one fine day, he steps away from it to take a shower and maybe get some fresh air, and his computer eats him.  The end.
