Saw two great movies this weekend, one old, one fairly new.

Friday night I finally watched Treasure of the Sierra Madre all the way through. This is one of those that I would keep only catching a few minutes of  now and then. I'm pretty sure that I probably saw this on the late show as a kid, but don't remember it .  I was really sad  when Bogart bought it in the end. He was getting rather psychotic and paranoid there toward the end and shot his partner leaving him for dead, but Bogie deserves better than getting macheted for his boots.

Saturday, watched Open Range which I thought was an excellent western. I really liked the showdown at the end. I get the feeling they put some time into trying to make it realistic.  When Costner puts down the hired gun I can just see that actually being the way it was to be in a gunfight.  Robert Duvall is  great in his part. I think the guy may have been born in the wrong century because he is so believable in this kind of part.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

The Burgomaster

I bought OPEN RANGE a few weeks ago and I agree . . . it is a top-notch western.

My weekend viewing consisted of:

* THE ITALIAN JOB (the original version starring Michael Caine) - I need to watch this again in a few months.  I just wasn't in the mood for this type of movie while I was watching it, and I had a hard time getting into it.  I liked the ending, though.

* CAPTAIN SCARLET - I watched one episode of my box set in between other movies.

* THE MONKEES - I also watched one episode of this, right after CAPTAIN SCARLET.  The episode I watched had Lon Chaney, Jr. and Rose Marie as guest stars!

* CABIN FEVER - Bought it and didn't like it.  See my comments in another thread.

* RUNAWAY JURY - Bought it and really enjoyed it.  But then again, I'm a big fan of both Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman.  It was nice to see D-Day from ANIMAL HOUSE playing the role of the judge!

* MAMBO ITALIANO - Sort of an Italian version of MY BIG, FAT GREEK WEDDING.  Paul Sorvino is in it and he has a few very funny lines.

* CHINATOWN - The Roman Polanski/Jack Nicholson classic.  This one is worth watching every couple of years.  A welcome addition to my collection.

OPEN RANGE and of course TREASURE OF SEIRRA MADRE are great films. Saw the commercial ad on AMC or TCM for this weekends showing.

I haven't seen any of these, but  I know a little trivia about it . The marionettes look a lot better because their heads are in scale with the bodies. They had reduced the size of the Supermarionation components so they could fit into the chest..

I have seen a lot of the Thunderbirds, watched Fireball XL5 and Supercar as a kid. I know a lot of  folks don't get the appeal of these shows, but I always loved the details they put into the miniature vehicles.

I also heard that Gerry Anderson is making an all CG  version of Captain Scarlet. and of course there is a live action film of the Thunderbirds being released this year.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

The only Gerry Anderson show I watched and have the set for is Captain Scarlet- the other shows are sort of lame (especially thunderbirds for the off proportion puppets as mentioned.)

This weekend the only movie I watched was Riot on Sunset Strip.

Two really good ones. Haven't seen Sierra Madre in awhile. Open Range was excellant, I kept expecting the Robert Duvall to get killed, because that's what usually happens to his type of character. I'm glad they didn't use that particular cliche, becasue, as you said, he was fantastic in this movie.

Everyone has potentially fatal flaws, but yours involve a love of soldiers' wives, an insatiable thirst for whiskey, and the seven weak points in your left ventricle.
