THE FOOD OF THE GODS (1976) - Don't miss it ! Tonight on Encore Mystery Channel at 9:45pm Eastern Time (that's about 15 minutes from now). If you liked EMPIRE OF THE ANTS or NIGHT OF THE LUPUS  you'll love this one. Earlier this month I saw about 15 minutes of this film and now it's on again tonight.

I want to know if anyone knows if they were really killing rats with rat-shot in this movie. It sure as hell looks real.

Trivia - Marjoe Gortner was one of these kid preachers when he was like 5 years old. When he grew up he wrote a book about  how his parents forced him into  it . They would help him memorize Bible verses by dunking his head in a bucket of water.  I wonder what happened to him? I don't think he's been in anything since the 70's.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

Boy the poster is sure a lot better than the movie is!

Saw this one as a child on a double bill with Empire Of The Ants on local TV.  Scared the hell out of me at the time.  Have watched it a few times since and it of course has lost a lot of it's magic.

Caught a few minutes of it last night before finally watching Infested on DVD.

A bald man named Savalas visited me last night in a dream.  I think it was a Telly vision.

Gerry, I agree with you 100%....the poster is difinitely so much better than the film!!!

I have an original one sheet poster in my collection - the condition of the poster is not great & ironically the edges have been chewed by mice (or rats!).

But hey any film that stars Marjoe Gortner is cool in my book. Does anyone know what ever happened to him?

I just love movies where the lead character is a complete jerk, but we're not supposed to care because hey, he's an environmentalist!  ;)

At least it didn't have a soundtrack by Joan Baez.

Well, I thought FOOD OF THE  GODS was a fun film. Giant chickens, bees, maggots, and of course rats all in one film and the special effects were more fun than any CGI that I've seen in any recent film.

When the bee gets the first victim early in the film now that was creepy and he swelled up like that. Very effective though the bee was unreal looking. Classic example of a good B-movie.

According to the IMDB, he still appears in movies occasionally. His last was Wild Bill in 1995;

Marjoe Gortner...what a great B-movie name!
Yeah, the poster is cool, but i just looked at it aging and i wondered...how did the rat get her up in the tree?
Can a giant rat throw a woman over its sholders? Do rats have sholders? Or, did he drag her up by the leg we can't see from this angle?
Alternitivle...am i thinkin' about this too much?

Maybe she climbed up the tree to get away from the rat and it came up after her.

Mr. Hockstatter

Looks like they went up the tree together, and then just as the rat was getting to second base...

My wife watched this film with me and just looked at me as the giant chicken nearly killed that guy in t he barn. She didn't expect that one. You had to be there.........

Flangepart

"The chicken did it in the barn with his beak!"
THERES something you'll only see in the B-movie version of "Clue"

"Aggressivlly eccentric, and proud of it!"

I remember seeing this years ago, one of those movies you like inspite of yourself. Bert I. Gordon's giantism fetish strikes again.

I've always wanted to see the documentary "Marjoe" about Gortner's evangelist days. Supposed to be very good. In addition to his acting gigs, he's also worked as a photographer (apparently did some work for Playboy at one time) and did public appearances and deprogramming related to his whistle blowing on other phony preachers.

I heard snippets of an interview with him on one of those "Best of the 70s" syndicated radio shows not too long ago. Seems like an interesting guy. Says his parents combined the names Mary and Joseph to get his name (IIRC, they were going to spell it Marjo if he had been a girl), so they already had plans for him from the get-go.
