Hey, I just saw some trailers for the Sky Capt. film.  Anyone know the plot, or source material... (New Idea, Comic Book, Video Game, Greek Tragedy etc)?  It looks pretty interesting, but could also be a CGI driven crapola fest, a particular bugaboo of mine.  Anyone know anything more?

I read in Cinefex [i think] that this is one hell of a cgi fest.  So really it coul be horrible.  The pics they showed looked ok though, but I get the same feeling in my stomach with this flim that I got for the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie.

It's based on an old comic book.

I've read two early reviews of it and the critics seem to like it.

Go HERE to listen to Ebert & Roeper's review.
(click on the little speaker icon next to the title)
If it doesn't play properly, click where it says, "Play MP3" and you can listen to the review on your regular media player.

Ebert gave it thumbs up...Roeper gave it thumbs down.

Aside from Roeper's review, this thing has been getting great word.  Seems that most everyone is smitten by it.

If I'm not mistaken, the director originally made a short feature of the film on his computer.  He took it to a studio and they loved it.  I'm pretty psyched about it myself.  Looks like a fantastic film.

A bald man named Savalas visited me last night in a dream.  I think it was a Telly vision.

I read some review in the Boston Globe and the guy was talking about the movie like it was the second coming of christ or something.

Wow,maybe it will be worth the price of admission.  Thanks everyone.  I'm a sucker for any sort of unique alternate sci-fi ideas.   This looks like a neat combo of Buck Rogers saturday serials and alternate history.

This movie is totally CG except for set pieces in the foreground and the actors.  The look is based on the old Max Fleischer Superman Cartoons.  The story is not complicated and it is made to resemble an old time movies serial .

I read when Jude Law saw the short film, he immediately signed on to star and to be one of the producers.

I'm going to try and be there this weekend.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

I love the old republic serials Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, used to watch them on TV as a kid whenever they were on. I'm just the wrong generation.  I'll try and go too.  If only when its on second run.

I'm tempted to go see it, if only for the Fleischer meets "Metropolis" visual style and the throwback movie serial/pulp story/"Crimson Skies"/alternate past future plot. Might be good brain candy with pretty pictures, and since the actors seem to be playing it straight, could even be a guilty pleasure if it does suck. As long as the story and dialogue are even slightly better than "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" (which wouldn't be hard to do BTW), I'd be happy since I'm kind of setting my expectations low for the storyline.

Yes, I saw a short behind the scenes spot on this and pretty much everything in the movie except the actors and the props they're holding are CGI. Not even the normal locations like an office or a street are real, it's ALL CGI.

I've also read that it was originally going to be called just The World of Tomorrow, but there was another film coming out with a similar title, so they added the Sky Captain part.

Anyone want to take bets on how long it will be until a Sky Captain video game comes out?

Scott

Yea, I just read some reviews of it today in the newpaper and they gave it 4 out of 4 stars. They said this will be the next wave in cinematography and the actors did everthing in front of a blue screen. They say that the look of the film is like an old film, but the in a new way. They were very upbeat about the film and they said the story is ok also.

I really don't like CGI, but the review really caught  my interest and I may see it on the big screen this weekend.

I'll see this when it hits the pay channels (HBO, Cinemax, etc.). Theaters are too expensive, too loud & run too many normal commercials for me to stomach anymore.

Not to nitpick but is anyone else having a problem with the whole "Sky Captain" moniker? It just sounds so...dry. So unoriginal. Bland. I would've even accepted "Sky King" but that's already taken.

Don't get me wrong; I love this type of genre. Flash Gordon (the serials, not the 80's movie), Buck Rogers, Crash Corrigan...but "Sky Captain"? That's the best they could come up with?

Nothing will ever top Commando Cody.

SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW (2004) - Nice effort on the part of the director. The film has a special quality to it, but it's also missing something as far as entertainment goes. I really liked the opening scene with the blimp, the robots through Manhattan, the attack of Capt. Sky's base, and the Asian female with the staff. There were many elements from other films in this one that reminded you of everything from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Flash Gordon, Lost Horizon, and even Jurassic Park. Even with all that I had a hard time getting into the film and I actually fell asleep for about 15 minutes of the film.

Are you kidding? This movie is going to rock. I can feel it in my bones.
