Damn, that sucks a bunch.  I always thought Phil would be the first to go.  You'll be missed, Dime.  R.I.P.

From the article:

"Police released the names of two others who died. They were Nathan Bray and Erin Halk, both audience members.

[the gunman] reportedly shot and killed another member of the band before firing shots into the crowd."

You others will be missed, too.  R.I.P.

Rant Time:

I understand being angry.  I understand wanting to hurt someone who has somehow hurt me.  I really do.

I will never, ever, under any circumstances understand willingly killing people unknown to me-innocents, as it were.  This applies to acts of terrorism or dumb 'shooting sprees' like this.

That's not anger, imo.  That's something else.  At least it is not anger at a PARTICULAR event or person.

Rant off.  Sorry.

mr. henry

wasn't ever a huge pantera fan, not that i don't appreciate their contribution to metal and their talent...i've seen some crazy sh*t at shows but not a MURDER...the loss of a person let alone an artist is tragic. the worst thing i got caught up in was a fight with racist white-shirt-red-suspender skinheads at a FEAR show in CHICAGO...the first show where they stopped selling beer in bottles...AND there's a black fellow in the band. i'm off topic now, but racist skinheads SUCK.

sorry about dimebag pantera fans...

Master Blaster

It was probably some mal adjusted knucklehead who snapped and decided to start blasting people because he thinks Aliens sent signals to the fillings in his teeth. There always seems to be some damn nutter out there ready to do this kind of crap. Dimebag was only 38 and I bet the rest of the victims were probably just kids. Disgusting.

Ozzymandias

I remember reading somewhere Robert Altman said studio people told him that the ending of NASHVILLE was unrealistic because "nobody would kills a popular singer." Of course, that was 1975 (or76).

Appearntly the guy killed Dimebag because he was p**sed that Pantera broke up.

Wow, what a douche.

Fluffy Cat Food

I was totally shocked by this. I'm not a fan of Dime but holy s**t

"Some witnesses told police the 25-year-old gunman, Nathan Gale of nearby Marysville, Ohio, screamed "you broke up Pantera" before gunning down Abbott and firing at other band members and the crowd."

Thats a quote fromthis article-http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,11640098%255E28102,00.html

What an absolutely stupid reason to kill someone, much less those people in the audience.  I think this is what I like to call the 'surface reason:' the easy answer.  I think his problems go much deeper.

I recall very clearly when I first learned Peter Chriss was leaving KISS how 'upset' I was.  I made some stupid, off-hand comments in front of my Dad and my best friend (I was about 15 at the time), none of which were like "we should kill Peter."  (More in the line of 'oh no, what do we do now, our lives are over' blah blah blah blah)

My friend was about the biggest KISS fan ever-his whole room, even the ceiling, was covered in KISS posters and he'd been to 7 concerts, including both the filming of KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park and Alive II.

However, he said to me "get a grip man, it's just a band."  I'll never forget that.  My Dad jumped my butt and my friend, who I thought would be more upset than I was, were both like, well, whatever.  Life goes on, let's keep it all in perspective.

These things can run even deeper than that.  The classic example in Sociology 101 is the mass hysteria that swept the nation when rumours of Paul McCartney's death were circulated.

For anyone who cares...
knac.com is doing a tribute to Darrel, playing Pantera and Damageplan stuff. Don't know how long it's going to be but it's been going for quite awhile now.

A tragic event that should have never taken place. I wish security would do a better job of stopping those a***oles.

What are they supposed to do?  If they start searching everyone upon entry and making people walk through metal detectors, etc, everyone will complain about that, too.

Tragic event-that's true.  But let's but the responsibility where it lies: the miswired brain of a freak who thought a particular collection of musicians staying together was more important that human life.  This act (and those like it) are conscious decisions of people with free will.  It's not society's fault, it's not because their mommy did not hold them enough.

There's plenty of people with problems and bad upbringings that are fine, upstanding people who don't go blasting away at innocent people at a rock concert.

I say let's stop making excuses for people like this, and simply say good riddance as one would a cockroach.  At least he cannot hurt anyone else; the cops deserve an attaboy for not trying to 'talk him in.'

Though I agree with most of what you have said ulthar, I just thought I would point something out.  In the early 90's I attended 2 Metallica concerts in the Meadowlands (NJ) where you could not walk through the gate without first being stopped to have a metal detector wand run over you. Women had to open their purses and show what they contained. I also attended a Metallica show in the Garden State Arts Center where you had to walk through a metal detector. Of course this annoyed many but if you wanted to see the show, you had to do it. Now on the other hand, these places were full size arenas with big security forces and not smaller clubs like the one where this shooting occured.
Essentially it does come down to the fact that this guy was going to do this some way no matter what security was like so blaming security or lack of is unrealistic. It's a harsh world that we live in and unfortunately, there's plenty of people like this to go around...security or no security.

I'm trying to remember if we had to go through similar at Oz Fest in Raleigh a few years ago...I seem to think we did.  In this situation, one has to simply decide if  being 'offended' about being 'searched' is bigger than the desire to see the concert.

I recently went deer hunting on federal property, and we got searched at the gate.  By guys with big guns.  Though I was not happy about it, I knew it going in (it was in the rules for getting to go), so I had no basis to complain (and wouldn't anyway).  Of course, I didn't have anything 'to hide' anyway; it's just irksome that someone is going through my stuff.
