Bought AFRICA SCREAMS (1949) and JACK AND THE BEANSTALK (1952) on a $1 DVD at Target the other day. Seen them both a number of times in the past, but I wanted to check the quality of the DVD which was decent and was getting some good laughs while reviewing some of the scenes. My favorite all time comedians. JACK AND THE BEANSTALK was also one of my favorite holiday films growing up and AFRICA SCREAMS was always thought of one of their lesser films, but upon viewing it again it was great fun. The film also has Shemp Howard of The Three Stooges fame and Clyde Beatty, Frank Buck, and Max and Buddy Baer. Joe Besser is hilarious as the butler. Lot's of laughs for only $1 at Target. That's .50 cents a movie. Not bad. Wonder why only these two Abbott and Costello films made to the public domain departement?

Buddy Baer plays a giant in both JACK AND THE BEANSTALK (1952) and GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN (1958).

I've had my eye on the Abbott and Costello DVD collection for a few months now.  There are 4 volumes and each includes several movies.  I think each volume is around $15 or $20.

AFRICA SCREAMS has been issued and reissued so many times by different companies . . . geez . . . I remember having it on VHS in the video store where I worked back in the 1980s.

"Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone."

"Africa Screams" probably also features the first gay gorilla ever seen in films. When they were making the film, word came down, from whoever decides those things, that the gorilla in the film couldn't be a female gorilla. Of course, which means it had to be a male gorilla. And as it chases Lou through most of the film, it then had to be gay. Thus, a gay gorilla.

God bless the censors.  It was likely the grandfather of the man who wanted to put Chewbacca in lederhosen.

I was surpised at all the noteables in AFRICA SCREAMS. Joe Besser was also in the ABBOTT AND COSTELLO TV show a lot and part of THE THREE STOOGES team at one point.
