The recent post on squirrels gave me some ideas

A young and promising squirrologist (or whatever they're called) goes on a field trip to the Kamchatka peninsula to study a rare breed of squirrel. There she (yes it is a she) finds that their habitat is destroyed and strange things are going on (dogs disappearing etc, cue ominous music). The only one who takes an interest is Igor, the guy from the hardware store in the remote village.

Together they investigate and discover a dump for decommissioned Russian nuclear submarines, which is irradiating the whole neighbourhood. They are attacked by the mutant squirrels and barely escape with their lives. In the settlement, the chief/general whatever wants nothing to do with this, because the Russian Navy is the only source of income for the place and he doesn't want to upset them

Meanwhile, the squirrels have gnawed through the only power line connecting the settlement with the rest of the world. It is now cut off and soon overrun by deadly squirrels. Moreover the power failure causes dangerously high temperatures in the derelict nuclear sub still in the harbour.

From then on, the script basically writes itself, as long as you go towards a finale with the derelict sub blowing up, obliterating the squirrels but with Igor and the squirrologist miraculously alive.

Remember, you read it here first
