....none other than Robert Downey Jr. .  Let's hope he can stay sober long enough.

I think Jon Favreau is putting a lot of faith in Downey to cast him in the lead of  what will be a movie with at least a $100 million dollar budget. I think he is an interesting choice though, because no matter his travails with drugs and the law, Downey does have the acting chops for it.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

Are they doing the Tony Stark as an alcoholic storyline from way back when I still read comics?

Seriously, he can do all kinds of good work. Maybe since he's been a roll acting wise after his last round of booze/drugs/prison trouble he's trying to follow Johnny Depp and latch onto a big blockbuster/franchise either for the paycheck or proving to studios he can be depended on for bigger films. "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" was an underappreciated hoot, but I wonder if he wants the bigger paycheck a comic book film would bring. Let's just hope he's not having to sock it away for a legal defense fund for the next time he falls off the wagon.

I was never a huge Iron Man fan, mostly read others issues, but is Stark (or whoever is in the armor these days) enough of a fleshed out character to hang some depth on like in say Batman Begins? Iron Man isn't iconic like Batman, Spiderman, or Superman, so they will have to do the work to get the character and concept to stick in the minds of non-fanboys.

I was always a bit disappointed that Sabbath was not on the soundtrack to Terminator.  The storyline and the song follow each other close enough, it would have been perfect.

Nah they'd have a cover version done by some popular at the moment group, like the Killers, Panic! at the Disco, Seether, or Audioslave. Or just let Velvet Revolver do it. Unles the lyrics would be too far out for the movie, then they'd just sample or remix it (making sure to overuse the line "Iron Man lives again!") and let some rapper put new inane lyrics on it.

Sabbath's "Iron Man" was based on "The Iron Giant", by Ted Hughes, the husband of Sylvia Plath --
There's been a cartoon & Peter Townsend of The Who did another Rock Opera on it -- something I still haven't heard or seen --

I'm not sure which is worse: these stupid dance remixes, or rock groups that think they can get away with covering Sprach Zarathustra.

Speaking of the Black Sabbath song, I've always wondered why it is that nobody ever wants to listen to the rest of the song. Seriously. Literally every headbanger I've ever met stops the song right after he says "I am Iron Man", & starts the song over, & keeps doing that until they get bored & pull out some Iron Maiden or Slayer or something. I can understand why somebody may not want to listen to the rest of the album, but only wanting to hear a tiny sliver of one song?

That's the only reason I own a copy of Paranoid- so that I could hear the rest of the @#$%&!* song. And it's a pretty cool song, too. But for cryin' out loud, what on God's green Earth is wrong with the rest of it?

Trek...Are you serious!?

You know, I thought the Fantastic 4 had the worst casting.
This takes the cake!

Are you seriously kidding me!?
Robert Downey Jr.!?

Oh God help us all....

What disillusioned casting director thought he'd be perfect for the role!?

I think they should do a SGT.FURY and his HoWLING COMMANDOS movie. With Jack Black as Sarge. Or make a movie with ALL them giant monsters from the Jack Kirby comic books. Now THAT I would watch! MONSTERS on the PROWL-the MOVIE! (sigh...)

I was a big Iron Man fan back when I was a kid. I was also a Daredevil fan....looks like I'm ready to think yet another movie sucks.

I have the Pete Townsend concept album. Even the inclusion of John Lee Hooker on vocals on one song and Roger Daltrey on a couple (including a weak cover of The Crazy World of Arthur Brown's "Fire") can't save it. Can't remember if Entwhistle played on the Daltrey tracks, and I'm not digging the tape out. I did like the song "A Friend is a Friend", but it's not a rock song at all.

People listen to only the beginning of "Iron Man"? Hell, it's one of those songs that classic rock radio overplays so much that I now try to avoid it since it's a song I like and don't want to burn out on it. Stupid narrowing playlists.

Getting back to comic flims, after that goofy but actually kind of fun in a low expectations sort of way TV movie about Nick Fury and SHIELD starring David Hasselhoff and Lisa Rinna I wonder if anyone would want to touch Sgt. Fury for a while. I do like the Jack Black idea only if they did it in a knowingly self aware way so that they would have to explain how Nick's uniforms are the only ones in the group that keep getting destroyed while he only gets flesh wounds.
