Watch The 39 Steps! For goodness sake, we've been telling you this for months now. I've seen the beginning to the Snows of Kilimanjaro and it was alright. If nothing else, the story was written by Hemmingway and it stars Gregory Peck. And be careful of some of those ninja movies. I appears you might straying into Godfrey Ho territory. That's not good territory.

Burns and Allen show...priceless.

Your list is depressing insomuch that I am realizing how many films that exist in this world that I will never have the pleasure of viewing in this lifetime.

Scott

Scottie,  I will make it a point to view 39 STEPS this month. Thanks again.

Loyal1, I agree BURNS AND ALLEN is priceless material. Some others that I really like are ABBOTT AND COSTELLO (both movies and TV show), MARX BROTHERS, RED SKELETON, and JACK BENNY.

THE HONEYMOONERS are also great.

Don't be depressed about it. Most of them can be found at the $1 store, grocery stores, and other 10-50 movies packs. This collection cost about $175 total. Average price $1.

I recognize maybe one title out of four. Anytime I think I'm buying too many cheap DVDs I'll think of you.

The classic comedy episodes can be good, I wish there were more You Bet Your Life/Best of Groucho episodes out there cheap. I love those.

Is your film "High Risk" the action/comedy starring James Brolin, James Coburn, Anthony Quinn, Lindsey Wagner, and Ernest Borgnine? I have that one and like it. I remember the trailer because that film used to play in Huntsville, AL quite a lot and when the theaters used to run trailers on local TV stations for non-studio films this one used to turn up. Even into the early 80s they used to run ads for it, the second half of double features I guess.

It isn't so much the ability to buy all these hidden gems...it is in a question of time!  Even if I spent every last waking moment possible watching these movies, there will always be more rolling in and so many more from that past I will not be able to see.

Abbot and costello, Jack Benny and the Honeymooners are some of my favorites...thanks to my step father's influence growing up.  And I cannot forget the 3 Stooges.  Ahhhh, memories and thanks to Nick at Nite and public programming and reruns!

The Burgomaster

Here is my 2 cents worth . . .

Curse of the Headless Horseman - The worst movie ever made. Period.

Head, The - Terrible.  Similar to THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE.

Ironbound Vampire, The - Okay amateur flick, shot on video.

Hells Bloody Devils - Dumb, but fun Al Adamson drive-in flick.

Death Rage - Dubbed Yul Brynner gangster flick.  So-so.

Memorial Valley Massacre - Terrible.  Cameron Mitchell has a mercifully small role.

Haunts - Somewhat slow, but worth watching.

Scream Bloody Murder - Rotten acting, but an okay late-night flick.

Christmas Evil - Another Killer Santa movie.

The Witches Mountain - Boring, dubbed horror flick.

Funeral Home - Disappointing.

Deep Red - One of my favorites, but it will be disappointing if you don't have the widescreen version.

Virus - Awful, awful, awful all-star disaster nonsense.

The Milpitas Monster - Fun, but VERY low-budget.  Made by a high-school teacher!

Panic - Rotten, dubbed horror flick.

Cathy's Curse - Okay, but the version in the CHILLING CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK does not have very good video quality.

The Alpha Incident - Another crappy Bill Rebane flick.

Gothic - Visually interesting at times, but I didn't like the movie very much.

Track of the Moon Beast - Fun, but pretty bad.

House of the Dead - Should have been a lot better.

Slashed Dreams - Awful.  The original title was SUNBURST or something.  The title SLASHED DREAMS is pretty misleading.

Drive-In Massacre - A few good moments, but overall, not very memorable.

Street Fighter - One of the best martial arts flicks.

Chinese Connection  - Pretty good martial arts flick.

Fists of Fury  - Pretty good martial arts flick.

Colossus and the Amazon Queen - Horrible.  Ridiculous dubbing.  An embarrasing movie for Rod Taylor.

Return of the Streetfighter - Good sequel.

You Bet Your Life (Best of Groucho) - I used to watch the re-runs of this show on late-night TV.

The Man Who Knew Too Much - The James Stewart version is excellent.  I haven't seen the earlier version.

Get Christie Love - Better than average TV blaxploitation movie.  Was a short-lived TV series.

The Astral Factor - Terrible special effects.

Don't Answer the Phone - I just ordered this.  Saw it a long time ago, but I don't remember it.
"Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone."

Scott

Yep, that is the same film Yaddo. Been looking forward to a future viewing of this one.

That CHILLING 50 PACK does have a few bad ones Burgomaster.

Yaddo 42

Let us know if Dan Candy's Law is any good, I must have picked it up in cheapo bins and such a dozen times.

The Proud and the Damned is dull and a waste of Chuck Conners (who seems made for spaghetti westerns) and Caeser Romero (who is a long way from those Carmen Miranda musicals and Batman) if I remember.

The Bodyguard has some good unintended laughs. The tacked on intro with the two guys imitating Chiba and Bruce Lee's fighting styles and the Japanese mafia making an example of Chiba's sister by carving the words "Cosa Nostra" on her body. Real secret "thing" of yours there guys. Also the tommy guns/burp gun gundown with really obvious prop guns.

The Burgomaster

I'm starting to feel creepy . . . I have many of the same movies that Scott has.

Personal tastes . . . ah, personal tastes . . .
See, I like "The Head" very much, if it's the same dubbed German film of the same title, apparently in Public Domain. or else why release it on a 50 pack?
I really enjoyed its toying with time and found it very tense, with the shadows and whatnot.
"Sabotage" is masterful early Hitchcock.  Very very creepy scene wherein woman realises her husband is a mass-murderer & tries to take him out.  All done in silence -- she looks at possible weapon/he sees her looking & divines her intention . . . Really quite a masterpiece of '30's film making -- it was things like this that got Hitichcock continually noticed by Hollywood and the big money people.  Just an excellent film all around.
"Dick Tracey Meets Gruesome" -- Gruesome is Boris Karloff.  'Nuff said . . .
"Four Dueces" -- While not up to "Sons of The Desert", still one of the better Laurel & Hardy's from the Sound Era.
"Mr. Moto's Last Warning" -- Mr. Moto is Peter Lorre.  Anything Peter Lorre does is, as Pauline Kael once observed, "Acting for grownups" -- re.  Even doing crap serials, the man is simply so good, you have to be amazed by him.
peter oh who cares . . .
I have no idea what this means.

Scott

FOUR DUECES is a Jack Palance film I believe and I plan on viewing THE HEAD sometime this month.

Akk!
Title similarity kills me every time --

I have no idea what this means.

Not that you need suggestions for MORE movies or TV shows, but have you seen the public domain episodes of the TV show of "The Third Man" starring Michael Rennie? I have a disc with three episodes. I think only 4 out of 70-odd episodes are in public domain. Fun old-fashioned, lazy Sunday TV viewing. Formulaic scripts stripped bare, rarely more than 5 characters (or speaking parts at least) in an episode. So dialogue driven you can close your eyes and enjoy them like old radio shows, I'd like to find the real radio show of "The Third Man" as well, Welles did the voice in some episodes. Very Cold War in mood and tone, with many mentions of "the enemy" without spelling out political or social philosophies. Lots of dictators from imaginary countries.

Harry Lime played by the gaunt, almost sickly, and very tan (think George Hamilton) Michael Rennie, who doesn't resemble Orson Welles in the slightest. Then again the show takes an amoral black market profteer and turns him into a globe trotting rogue for truth and justice. KInd of like a down-market version of The Saint. Although the opening tries to recreate the "walking in the shadows" scene from the film, it almost works.

Some episodes even feature Jonathan Harris, Dr. Smith of Lost in Space fame, as his personal assistant and comic relief. It's a more restrained performance, but did that man ever play anything other than effete snob and scaredy-cat?

The movie THE THIRD MAN starring Orson Welles is a classic. Haven't seen the TV series out on DVD.
