Oh my word, what happened to Michael Ironside's career that he agreed to be in THIS production?

A group of modern day tunnel diggers in New York discover a budding volcano under the city.  With clues taken pretty much straight from DANTE'S PEAK and VOLCANO, our intrepid crew, with the help of Alexandra "PIRANHA" Paul (yes, the L-T from "Baywatch") piece together What Is Really Happening (tm) to the disdain of government officials.

Paul is a geologist (I think) who is also the ex-wife of one of the tunnel diggers.  Yep, that happens every day.     A tunnel digger in NYC finds a volcano and the geologist sent to investigate is his ex.  Oh, and the FBI thinks the 'unexplained happenings' are terrorism.

You want to dig your eyes out with jagged igneous rocks formed from cooled lava?  This one has just about everything a b-fan could wish - mad scientist (Ironside), corporate greed, overly suspicious FBI agents, super cool tunnel diggers and looped special effects.  Cap it off with reunited ex-lovers who come to realize that it takes a volcano in the city to heat things back up.

Professor Hathaway:  I noticed you stopped stuttering.
Bodie:      I've been giving myself shock treatments.
Professor Hathaway: Up the voltage.

I am pretty sure that this is the one I tried watching one night, but gave up after twenty minutes.  It felt like the film was getting nowhere and I was in fearsome pain caused by the acting and writing.

Plus, I had something else to watch at the time.  Wish I could remember what it was that bumped this out.  It might well have been "The Garbage Pail Kids Movie."

I have been meaning to view this one for a while......the premise reminds of me of this Family Guy clip:
