i been trying to remember this movie for years.it had a guy that (followed the premise of jacob's ladder) was in a foxhole, but he was imagining he was away from the battle scene..he has this ability in the dream state to create anything to happen if he dreams it.
what was it called?
(it had with a little help on as he made out with a black chick...any ideas?

 Sounds a little like SLAUGHTERHOUSE 5 (1972)....
Supernatural?...perhaps. Baloney?...Perhaps not!" Bela Lugosi-the BLACK CAT (1934)
Interviewer-"Does Dracula ever end for you?
Lugosi-"No. Dracula-never ends."

You are most likely remembering THE LATHE OF HEAVEN (1980):

Incredible movie, and yes, George Orr (Bruce Davison) does fall in love with a black woman (played by Margaret Avery).

Sounds like you're confusing Lathe of Heaven with Slaughterhouse 5.

In Slaughterhouse 5, Billy Pilgrim has to live his life at random intervals.  At times he's at war, then he's an old man, then he's in a POW camp in Dresden, then he's back in America and so on.  The story skips around intentionally.

In The Lathe of Heaven, George Orr has the ability to affect reality with his dreams but as far as I know, there weren't any war scenes in the novel or the movie adaptations.

The apocalyptic landscape that appears at certain points in the film could be remembered as a war scene.
