Deep River Savages (1970something)

       Also known as "The Man from Deep River".  This is apparently one of the first Italian Cannibal movies,  pre dating such family fare as Cannibal Holocaust and Eaten Alive by several box office seasons.    It 's very national geographic in places, though I don't know if cock fighting, impregnation ceremonies and mongoose vs snake fighting are what they cover in that publication though they certainly should.   Depending on your mood this is either mellow or slow.  I'd lean towards the latter.  But the caucasian "man" is well played and his love interest, actress Me ME Lai, does a passable job while looking authenticly native though her name unfortunately isn't worked in to the dialogue.   If you like jungle movies this is definately a must see and it actually has a bit of a heart to it, though that gets eaten.

Yep, there were a bunch of these mostly Italian jungle films that came out during the 70's. All of them about being lost and captured or raised in the jungles by remote natives whether in Southeast Asia or South America. They were all pretty much the same, but each film crazy viewing none the less.

Seen all of these films except Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals.

Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals



This was a little more professional than Masscre in Dinosaur Valley though not quite as fun. It compensates for it with an amazing soundtrack that sounds like Japanese folk-psych artists Ghost after taking Qualludes, primitive yet very stoned and funky. Features some silly but still appreciated soft core sex, most notably featuring the beautiful Laura Gemser, who should have been a much bigger star with her unique looks and sensuality. 3 and a half stars
