So I'm having a few buddies over for a poker night tonight, and I pretty much can't wait, mainly because it's a great cheap night in, but also because I usually make a tidy profit. :teddyr:

We usually play a 6-10 player tournament, with a £5 buy-in, winner gets £20-30 depending on how many entrants there were.

I was just wondering, are there any players on here?

I play hold 'em when I get together with my family, once a year or so.  My father's retired and a semi-pro, meaning he makes almost minimum wage playing games---he would do better if he would stick to table games and stay away from tournaments, but the tournaments are more fun for him.  My brother has won a couple of tournaments and may be even a better player.  He's entering a WSOP sattelite this year, we'll see how he does.  Nonethelss, I have won our last two family tournaments---I guess they don;t understand how to play against players as bad as me.

It's a great game combining statistics and psychology.  I would love to play more but I don't have any friends who are interested.

Used to play all the time when I was a wee little tacker with my grandfather and cousins at family gatherings.

Now I play every-now and then with friends.  Usually hold-em [it's the in thing you know].

It's a fun way to just catch up with friends, and possibly even earn a bit of petrol money, though I'm usually not that good.  I usually win a big hand and then chip away at it until it's all gone  :teddyr:

I know people who play online and go really well.  My friend was also telling me of her friends who work at the casino, and how playing against them is pretty much the worst thing possible to do: they'll sit there and say 'I have a full house, you have a three of a kind in fours' and she said she'd look at her cards and she would have 3 fours.  Needless to say she avoids playing with them now.

Yeah, I mostly play NL Hold 'em, but I'm now branching out into Omaha, Crazy Pineapple and 7 card stud. I play quite a bit online, particularly on Partypoker, and am currently making about $200-$300 a month on the 0.10c/0.25c and 0.50c/$1 tables.

As for last night, you guessed it... out first. Took ages to get a decent hand, and then got beaten by a flush! Typical.

That's what I love about it - it's a game you can approach from two totally different sides and still be successful. It's a wonderfully absorbing game if you like that sort of thing.

Wait...
I thought online gambling was illegal in the U.S.

From what I can tell from Jason's first post, since he put the money value in pound is that young/old Jason is from the UK, or thereabouts.

*Insert usual Australian griping about England's World Cup field goal kicking in rugby and usual comment about the cricket somehow*

It's an intriguing thing, online poker.  My friend was telling me that her ex rakes in about AU$20,000 a month playing poker online...  Though I think he'd have a good startup capital [he's apparently a rich kid with a Porsche]  :hatred:

I am indeed UK based, which is a bit of a shame at the moment, as the pound is so strong against the dollar!

And as for you sheep-stealers, yeah.. hard luck about the rugby, but you've still got that 5-0 ashes humping to gloat about for another year or so.
