This movie surprised me by having more of a horror element than I would have expected in a fantasy movie. Some of the more disturbing images stick with you long after you watch. Most interesting was the contrast between the horrors and monsters of the fantasy world and those of the real world. Hard to say which scene was more disturbing, the Pale Man or the Captain beating a guy's face in with a bottle in front of his father, then reacting indifferently when their story turns out to be true. Who's the bigger monster?

And the Pale Man. Wow. That has to be the most perfect depiction of the Boogie Man I've ever seen. As someone already said, one of the creepiest creatures to appear on film.

It still disgusts me that so many people who fancy themselves film buffs refuse to teach themselves to read subtitles. If you're one of those people, this movie will show you what you're missing, if not, then you should have seen this one by now, really.

Well, I see this movie without subtitles 'cause I'm spanish  but I use to see movies in original version (with subtitles in spanish), I think if you don't see in original version you lost too much of the actor's work...this is one of the best movies of the last year, a good story, good music, gore...The moster with the eyes in the hands are really scary...I see H.P. Lovecraft's influence in guillermo del toro movies, actually he's gonna make "in the mountains of madness" movie.

One of the "rhymes" between the real and fantasy worlds were the banquets.  The Pale Man has a feast set before him that he has no intention of eating.  The Capitan hoards food in a time of war and famine, and throws a feast for the upper crust. 

Also, in regards to the Pale Man, one of the creepiest things to me were the murals on the walls depicting him impaling babies... scary stuff.

Lots of little details from this one keep popping back into your mind later.

I'm waiting to bring it to someone with a flat screen, but has anyone else enjoyed their double disc DVD yet?!
