Suddenly the Verbal Morality Statute in Demolition Man doesn't appear so far fetched, though at this time they cannot legally do anything to you for swearing.

I'm all for curbing my foul language at inappropriate times, but I don't want anyone to tell me that I can't mutter a ****! to myself when the situation calls for it.

I saw this story on Fark.com. The commenters were, naturally, extra profane in response. I personally choose not to curse. Profanity doesn't offend me in any way, but I try to find other ways to express myself. It is in part a way to defuse my anger: Rather than utter an easy profanity, I say something silly, thereby (usually) amusing myself enough to let the anger go. If I hurt myself, the purposeful nonsense helps me to control the pain. When I'm playing video games and get frustrated, I can more easily laugh it off and remind myself that I chose to subject myself to playing the game. So basically, I don't curse to help me with overall self-control. Plus, as a registered word-nerd, I've noticed that people don't use the few real curse words (Carlin's Seven Dirty Words) correctly, so I refuse to use them until people learn to use them correctly  .

Goddamn but that's stupid. (hey, someone had to say it) Probably unconstitutional too.  I don't like gratuitous cussing -- to me that's lazy and unthinking -- but the occasional cuss is fine.

I"m all for this sort of thing.  This is one community governing itself.  Go for it.  The way it's supposed to be.

Whether I agree with the particular statute or not is immaterial.  I don't live there.  I live here.

Umbrella laws that say all communities must be alike are a BIG part of our cultural problems.

I gotta wonder though, How did he start a no swear club without being laughed at like crazy? If anyone tried to do that in my junior high, they probably would have been laughed out of the building. Even the teachers would probably laugh at them. I know I can curb my swearing if I want too. But I know if I'm mad or in pain I will swear so much I'll make a sailor blush!

Actually, unless the Penal Code of California has changed, and it may have, been a while since I've read it, section 415 says in part "any person who uses loud vulgar, and/or profane language in the presence or hearing of women or children is guilty of a misdemeanor and shall suffer confinement in the county jail of not less than 6 months." or words to that effect. I remember thinking when I read it that there's no way to enforce it, you would have to arrest everyone, including the police.
