Frontier(s) (2007)

Frontier(s) is a film that I had hyped up to me beyond belief by the members of another site.  I waited and waited to finally get a copy of the film and ended up watching it last night.

Frontier(s) is a French film about four young people trying to escape the rioting in Paris by driving to Holland.  Along the way, they stop at a small inn, in the middle of nowhere.  What they didn't realize is that the inn is ran by a group of Neo-Nazi cannibals. 

I had high hopes for the film after hearing so many people just gush about the film.  The movie's main problem is that it plays out like a French version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  That would be alright if I actually cared about any of the victims in the film.  The only one that I even remotely liked was Yasmin, the heroine of the film, pictured above.  Her ordeal is grueling to say the least, but still didn't make this a good film.

Overall it was a disappointment hence why I'm posting it in the "Bad Movies" section.  Some of you might enjoy it more than I but it just felt like things I had seen numerous times before.

I liked the way it was shot, but you're right in that it's just another variation of TCM. I couldn't care less about the characters and the alleged political message, either.

At least the character of the young girl who's been living for years with the sadistic family was well conceived.

I hate to mention other sites on here.  Andrew, let me know if you do not approve for any reason.

The website is Dreamindemon.com.  It's a true crime blog, but they have a great little forum with some great people; most of which are obsessed with horror films.  They recently started another site, Screamindemon.com which is completely movie related.

The director Xavier Gens did the Hitman movie which I enjoyed despite all of its flaws.

I've read about Frontier(s) on some horror sites and it's gotten pretty decent reviews. I'll have to rent it at some point.

One of my writers caught it in NYC last weekend and wrote a review.  He liked it quite a bit and made note of how violent it is.  I don't know if I'm getting old but between this and Inside, I don't know if I can take much more from France.  They really need to rein it in.

Ok, so I watched Frontier(s) last nite. I thought it was pretty good, but mostly just for the gore and the 'hot' guy played by Karl. The characters were so annoying that Tom made me think of the that one guy at the bar you always meet who thinks he's hot sh&* and always starts his lines with "hey babe.." as he tries to make himself look bigger in his Member's Only Jacket...

This movie was pretty good, but mostly not for the right reasons. I like movies with themes that revolve around social injustice and political messages but it had a feel-bad sensation to it. Mostly because you hated the oppressed so much that you would actually be rooting for the villians were they not neo-nazis.

I did particullary like the father though, his character was well done, he sorta reminds me of my father...which i probably shouldn't admit. His dialouge was great even if it were a bit cheesey at times. The young girl that had been there for so long, was interesting and i wish they would have ventured further with her character.

I do agree with everyone that this was basically a french rip-off of  TCM, but i still found it refreshing...

The gore WAS fantastic, I must admit.  But I do have to echo Rapscallion's thoughts about extreme gore.  I used to be all for gore in a film but over the past few years, I've grown both desensitized and could care less the amount of gore a film has.  Here, it works to an point but didn't make the film work for me.
