B&W pre-1968 disaster cosmic/natural or nuclear, lawlessness people fleeing

This has bugged me for years!.  The only thing I remember is a breakdown in civilization and a guy packs his family in a stocked up RV with food and guns and tries to flee to the country.  I think a gang of thugs grabs his daughter and makes him give them his RV and stuff. 
Really would appreciate any help since it's been about 20 years trying to figure out what the heck this one was.
