Nice topic.

In South Africa, it was almost certainly King Solomon's Mines (1918) followed by Allan Quatermaine (1919).

The first is still in existence and the second is unfortunately lost.

Wow.  Didn't know there was such an early version of King Solomon's Mines.  Worth checking out?

At the National Film Archives, we have ten reels of mostly unedited footage of that film but there are plans to have it restored soon. As it is, it's a little confusing to watch ~ some of the scenes are edited into the film upside down.

I found out today that the lamentable Son of Kong came out in 1933, less than a year after the release of King Kong.
