weird movie i saw in the 80s

i saw this as a kid and barely remember anything except a scene. i remember some people in a house arguing or trying to get out and this thing busts though the floor and rises up. this is about all i can remember, this thing may have been some kind of machine or life form. i remember it being shaped kind of like the puzzle box in hellraiser 2, when it reconfigures in that 3D diamond shape. so anyway, it busts up through the floor and its floating there and it looks like its made of lots of little shapes that are reconfiguring and moving around and looking very machine like. i dont know if somebody built it or if its an alien or what, but i think it wasnt good when that thing came through the floor. i know this isnt much to work with, any ideas?
