Ed Wood Inquiry

I've always appreciated Ed Wood's staple contributions to the "bad movie," but I never really did much research on his life. Additionally, Tim Burton's homage doesn't go into his unfortunate later years, when the man was reduced to $100 a screenplay in the 70's just to make end's meat. I never knew until recently that he made a few pornography films in 1970's. I'm not really a big porn fan (but I'm a guy so I'm not opposed to it), and I have a feeling that the "pornography" brand is probably dubious in regard to whatever he did at that time, but I am equal parts intrigued by this notion and repelled from ever watching any of them if given the opportunity. I mean, what would an Ed Wood porno look like? I have the feeling that it would be disturbing on many levels, not the least of which is the knowledge that this was probably something that the man was reduced to, not something he ever saw himself doing when he was the weird, misunderstood, idealistic filmmaker that he was in the 1950's.

Has anyone here ever seen any of these films? Are my expectations near the mark? Just wondering.

His pornos are sad, weird little films that make you feel like you wandered into a white trash sex addict acting out.

He did one movie about a bunch of chicks breaking out of jail. Not a porno but it was leading up to them. He actually was in one scene. He was sloppy-looking, overweight and obviously wearing nylon panties as his pants were down low enough to see them. I felt bad for him, like I wanted to give him some money and take him to dinner so he could have a decent meal. I've forgotten the name of the film because I honestly felt so bad for the guy that I almost started crying. His was a tragic life, in the classic meaning of the word "tragedy". He was so consumed with making films that he didn't ultimately care how far down the toilet he went, as long as he was involved with films.

Now I'm depressed.

That was what I was afraid of. I will definately avoid them, then. That is very sad. A strange man that at least deserved to be in the business in smaller roles if not directing or writing major scripts. I wonder what kind of career the man would have had had he been coming up in the 80's or 90's. May have been one of the great indy filmmakers. Who knows?
