We live in quite an interesting age. You can tell someone's sexual orientation and level of education from just their interests.

The question I have is if they're going to the trouble of disguising some of the weed as Christmas presents, why just stuff the rest into luggage where it's easy to find? I doubt they'd be carrying 20 pounds of weed for gifts and their own use, so why the half-assed smuggling attempt.

One thing I'm not surprised at is them being pulled over for speeding. Covering court, I've heard more than a couple of cases of dimwits who were caught speeding with a carload of drugs or stolen goods or bootleg cigarettes. You'd think the first thing they'd remember is to obey the traffic laws and try not to attract attention to themselves, but quite a few lack that kind of common sense. There was a guy not far from here who got busted speeding down the highway with actual marijuana plants hanging out of garbage bags in the back of his pickup. The cop pulls him over, and he's got potted plants wrapped up in the cab with him, with a great big leaf sticking out right behind his head. First thing out of his mouth is "I guess I'm caught." Turns out he'd heard the cops had a helicopter in his area, and he was moving his crop so they wouldn't find it.

There was another one with two guys who got pulled over with something like 90,000 untaxed cigarettes in their car. Poor schmucks didn't know what they were in for and figured the easy thing to do would be to plead guilty. Too bad smuggling smokes is a federal offence in Canada, and the fine is calculated by the cigarette. These guys weren't the sharpest knives in the drawer by any stretch of the imagination. They got something like $15,000 apiece. You could tell the judge even felt sorry for them, but it was one of those laws that took the punishment entirely out of his hands.

That's one thing I do miss about newspapers - covering crime. Almost always something interesting.

The really stupid thing is that the women gave the cops permission to search their vehicle!  That's something criminals consistently do that I can't understand for the life of me.

What are they thinking: they'll probably send me to jail if I refuse permission for a search, but if I volunteer to let them find the 20 lbs. of marijuana in my trunk, I'm sure they'll let me off with a warning??
