Scientists speculate Liquid Diamonds May Cover Uranus and Neptune

Well, this is interesting... scientists believe that the planets Uranus and Neptune may be covered in LIQUID diamonds.  What's really neat about this is, up until I stumbled onto this article, I didn't even know diamonds could be melted (apparently it's something new they've been working on.) 

But wow.. can you imagine it?  An ocean of diamonds?

And yes, I'll repeat this joke before someone else does... I just just see advertisements in the future: Show her you REALLY love her, give her a diamond from Uranus!

Diamond is just efficiently packed carbon. Diamonds are not forever. With a hot enough flame, you can set them on fire and turn them into ordinary carbon dioxide.

Once a diamond melts and loses its crystal structure, it's just ordinary old carbon. Of course, liquid carbon doesn't sound nearly as cool as liquid diamond.

I would like to see a diamond iceberg though. That sort of thing seems like it would be impressive.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking as well.  The only thing that differentiates diamond from other forms of carbon is the crystal structure.  Diamond has a wonderfully symmetrical interlocking lattice, which is why it's so strong.  Pencil lead is composed of exactly the same thing - carbon, but the atoms in graphite are arranged in sheets which easily separate from each other, which is why pencils write so well.

If you've got a liquid, obviously you can't have a crystal structure.  But still, it sounds cool
