Could it be GLEN AND RANDA (1971)?  Certainly it's about a guy and girl wandering around after the end of civilization, more than that I cannot say.

THE QUIET EARTH sounds about right, but there is also THE WORLD, THE FLESH, AND THE DEVIL (1959) with Harry Belafonte. It too has a love triangle after civilization has collapsed.

I don't think it's The Quiet Earth. The plot is similar, but the original guy in The Quiet Earth was middle-aged himself.

I also understood that the poster said he saw the film in the mid-1970s, which would rule out THE QUIET EARTH.

Plotwise, it sounds similar to THE WORLD, THE FLESH AND THE DEVIL although there love blooms between a black man and white woman and then a middle aged white man arrives on the scene. THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH has a similar type story too only in that one it's a young guy who steals away Betsy Jones-Moreland from her middle age husband.
