DARK RISING (2007)

This movie was bad in all the good ways imaginable!  I had seen it on the shelves for awhile and toyed with the idea of renting it, but always held off . . .  but then, in a week with no good New Releases and most of the older stuff I'd already seen, I pulled it off the shelf and had a great time with it.  Here is the synopsis:

In the beginning, we see a middle aged single father reading arcane spells out of an ancient book given to him by his now-deceased wife.  As he reads, his little girl, Summer, comes in and asks to be put to bed.  He takes her upstairs, tells her a story, then goes back down.  Suddenly the house begins shaking, a green light appears, and Summer comes downstairs to see what's wrong.  Cut to the present.

Jason Parks is distressed because his childhood sweetheart and fiancee is breaking up with him.  He talks one of her girlfriends into bringing her on a camping trip with his friend Rick and another girl, hoping to patch things up.  Little does he know she has become a lesbian witch!  That night, as Rick and Jason hang out by the fire, the girls go into the woods to open the book of spells they bought at an antique bookstore earlier that day . . . but when nothing happens, Jasmine (Jason's ex) and her lover Marlene take off into the woods for a topless makeout session.  But then a huge demon appears and Jasmine is bitten.  Marlene brings her back to the camp, but then the demon kills her and treatens Jasmine.  Jason tries to stop the evil beast from another dimension, but it easily masters him - until a grown up Summer shows up, wearing a black bikini and wielding a battle axe and two curved swords!

  Then Summer reveals she has become a warrior and a princess in another world where demons lke this one are all too common.  Rick and Jason and Renee (the surviving girl from the original trio) have to find a way to help Summer recover her lost memories and banish the demon back to the dimension it came from, while avoiding the monster and the now-infected-with-demon lust Jasmine.

This was a a goofy, fun, gory, girly thriller with all the essentials of a classic B-movie: blood - in decent quantitites; boobs - mainly Jasmine's; and beasts - mainly the big ugly demon thingy.  Also some classic lines of dialgue - "I'm more than just a man.  I'm a man with an axe!"

This is a plain old fashioned fun B movie in the tradition of DEATHSTALKER and THE LOST EMPIRE.  Well worth the rental!
