Was thinking about this movie I saw years back, think it came out late eighties or so, not sure.  Anyway, here's what I remember, the movie centers around a young boy (about eleven or so) who's on board a pirate ship.  While there he befriends a young girl about his age and one of the crewman.  The ship's lead by a greedy evil pirate guy, who eventually becomes the film's main villain.

Somehow or other, the boy gets separated from the ship and ends up on a desert island.  Among other things, he finds the island has several traps on it, apparently to prevent people from getting at the treasure set there.  He also encounters a large monkey (not sure if it was a baboon or a gorilla.)  The monkey at one point sets off one of the traps, which flings him into the air, but the primate is able to grab onto a tree branch and easily swing away, avoiding any permanent harm.

Eventually, the boy explores another part of the island where he finds the young girl and the friendly crewman, who have made friends with a native tribe.  Then the pirates show up again, to steal the islands treasure.  The young boy re-rigs several of the traps to slow down the pirates, but two of the them don't work correctly, prompting the young girl to say something like, "Don't ANY of your traps work?!?"

Not sure, but I think the film was actually produced by Disney...

Sound familiar to anyone?

This sounds like an actual "Tresure Island" film version

There was also two "made for TV" movies that I recall seeing years ago too.

Possibly "The Pirate Movie". (1982)

There's a ton of clips of it on Youtube if you want to check.

Sounds like the "Treasure Island" with Gabriel Byrne.

Did the boy's hatchet, given to him by his father (I think), play heavily into the story?  From your description, it sounds like the same movie.

If so, I think it might be Shipwrecked (1990).

Professor Hathaway:  I noticed you stopped stuttering.
Bodie:      I've been giving myself shock treatments.
Professor Hathaway: Up the voltage.
