Universal topples del Toro's Mountains of Madness.

I was thinking more about this, trying to figure why Universal is so afraid of this project and I think I figured it. At $150 million plus this would likely be the most expensive horror movie ever made. With so many studios having financial troubles, Universal is afraid taking a gamble on what would be a hugely expensive genre movie.

H.P Lovecraft is popular with people like us who have read his stories and watched movies adapted from his works. There are potentially many thousands who would see this movie, but those movie goers would still be in a small niche of the general population. What the studio of course wants is to market this movie to as many people as possible and they are not sure if a hard R horror movie would allow for that.

Another thing is just adapting the hugely bizarre story ATMOM, is a big challenge and not one that they are positive will succeed. Del Toro has a great imagination, but this would be a movie on a scale that he has never done before and the studios are worried he can't live up to it.

Part of me thinks that Universal is still interested in the project, but wants Del Toro to prove him self with something else before giving this the green light. Pacific Rim might be that movie and if it succeeds then they may give him another chance at ATMOM.

I still think Universal should take the gamble, as this movie has been thrown around for so long even people who have never read the story has heard something about it. Plus in the end its all about how awesome it looks. The source material won't matter if the movie is amazing and people will come to see it anyways. And lastly a big budget horror movie like this, could put horror movies in a completely new light and give the current generation a movie that will go down with the likes of Alien, The Thing, Jaws and The Exorcist.
