the best, heaviest albums by each group IMO - doubt many agree, I've seen all 3 slated by fans

I like all those albums, but I don't think they're the best by each band. The Black album is yes, from a commercial/production standpoint otherwise I'd always have to say Ride The Lightning if we're viewing Metallica as still a thrash act.

well The Black Album obviously shifted bucketloads so it's not 'hated' per se, but actually never seen anyone on this board stick up for it so fair play! yes it's a lot more polished/commercial. seems to be one that a lot of hardcore Metallica fans hate maybe because they thought they were selling out?

Yeah the general public loves the Black album. Funnily i knew this one guy that said Ride the Lightning was the Metallica sell out album because it wasn't "Pure thrash".

Motley Crue (1994)

The vast majority of Crue fans hate this album, and it also unfairly garners disdain from the casual glam rock fan as being Motley doing "grunge". It's not a grunge album at all. It's straight up hard rock and the heaviest MC have ever been, all thanks to the extremely talented John Corabi (ex-Angora and ex-Scream). I admit when I was first getting into Motley Crue, I was disappointed with this album and wasn't expecting such a dramatic shift in style. It was 1994, alternative rock was king and Vince Neil had left the band, they could have gone under a different name but hey, they're Motley Crue, they can do what the f**k they want. It's not my favourite Crue record, but looking at it from a technical, lyrics/music point of view, it's their strongest offering. I'm a big MC fan, but I can admit that they suck. It's actually a shame John Corabi didn't make another record with the band, he gave them real balls.

I agree with your two picks DWV, good albums just not on par with previous output.

Here's the first one that springs to mind:


Judas Priest's "Turbo" album from 1986. It gets such a slating for the fact that they used synthesised guitars, but that very same year Iron Maiden did it and nobody gave a toss! Yeah it's more commercial and the song-writing isn't that strong, but it was always gonna be a tall order to follow up Defenders Of The Faith & Screaming For Vengeance and Turbo is miles better than Demolition, Nostradamus, and even Point Of Entry. There's some great stuff here, "Turbo Lover" and "Reckless" being the stand-outs.

Pretty much my whole collection. I love WWII-era vocal jazz (Bing Crosby, Andrews Sisters, etc.), '80s Christian bands that only one or two people here would have heard of, some pop, Tom Waits, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tom Petty, Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Sousa, polka, Dixieland, and a whole host of others with hardly any type of metal to be found (I like a few of the hair bands, but I don't really own any of it). I know I have odd musical taste (pretty much odd taste all the way around, but for the sake of this thread topic, I'll stick to music), but it's just what I enjoy.
